Farmer takes government to court for parrot destruction

A Marigot farmer has begun legal proceedings against the Roosevelt Skerrit Government for damaged caused to his orange plantation by parrots.
Walter Williams of Marigot occupies almost 50 acres of land in that area. He said failed attempts to have the matter rectified with Government over the past four years have proved futile, hence his reasons for taking the step further.
“So what I did was to write to the Minister of Agriculture, Attorney General and even the Prime Minister and none of them replied. The kind of damage was estimated at over $172,000,” the farmer said.
According to Williams, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture visited the area and they too were surprised to see the amount of parrots that were destroying the crops.
“I was told that if I kill one at any time the charge is $70,000 plus one year imprisonment. So at this time I have taken them to court,” he said.
Williams is being represented in court by Peter Letang.
