Grey-cheeked Parakeets in Guayaquil

Grey-cheeked Parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhoptera)

The IUCN lists the Grey-cheeked Parakeet (Brotogeris pyrrhoptera) as endangered. According to birdlife international their decline was principally caused by the wild bird trade. With 59,320 birds reportedly imported by CITES countries between 1983-1988. In 1995, the wild population was estimated at 15,000 birds, principally in Ecuador. This represents a very crude decline of c.70% in 10 years, although it is still locally common in suitable habitat remnants.

Although I have never seen much fact in the many accusations that have been made towards introduced city parrots, as a conservation biologist I do prefer threatened parrots to populate cities in their native ranges, where they are most appropriate. Today, trough our flickr pool, we discovered just such a threatened parrot: Sun Conures (Aratinga solstitialis) are colonizing the city of Boa vista in the state of Roraima, Brazil which is located in the conures natural range.

Another stop on our German expedition was Stuttgart. Remarkably enough no Psittacula species here but this was wholly compensated by the presence of beautiful Yellow-headed Amazons (Amazona oratrix).

City Parrots of Kingston Jamaica

Jamaica is home to two endemic parrots, the Yellow and Black-billed Parrots. They live mainly in undisturbed forest areas, such as the Cockpit Country in Trelawny and John Crow Mountains in Portland. Despite illegal activities to capture and sell them, they survive because of the remoteness of much of their habitat.

One young Macaw found the other still lost

Thanks to the media attention we received a lot of sightings of the macaws today. Haarlem and surrounding areas are really supporting us and that makes us feel a lot better.

With the help of the reports today we found the older youngster. It is all right and is taken care of by its parents. They have settled near Kenau park.
