Rare Parrot photographed for the first time

Perija (Todd's) Parakeet (Pyrrhura caeruleiceps)

Adriana Tovar and Luis Eduardo Uruena researchers of the Colombia-based nonprofit Fundación ProAves, found and photographed the extremely rare Perija parakeet (Pyrrhura caeruleiceps), of which only 30 to 50 individuals likely survive. These photographs are the first ever taken of the species.

Poor parenting blamed for parrot deaths

Orange-bellied parrot (Neophema chrysogaster)

Poor parenting is believed to have caused the deaths of 46 endangered orange bellied parrots at the Taroona Wildlife Research Centre in January last year.

It was originally thought disease was to blame and remaining birds at the centre were quarantined.
