How many free-ranging Scarlet Macaws are there?

The last two Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao) in The Netherlands

In The Netherlands only this pair remain. We call them Toos and Nape. There have been as many as 7 Scarlets seen in a flock and several successful nests since the late 70ties. It is unclear what happened to them. (Please let us know if you have information on this). Reports are that a northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) took several as prey and birds electrocuted themselves while playing on train power lines (something we suspect only young birds do).

Nests of the pair have been poached. And they are probably only partial fertile due to inbreeding.

These birds have been flying free all their lives and are evidently quite able to out smart the resident Goshawk. We suspect that young birds are most at risk of predation, as is true in most studies of wild parrots.

In Medellin Colombia there is a population of free-range macaws at the zoo. And in Cumbria in the UK we visited a larger population of free-range parrots, among them many macaws.
